Unveiling Ancient Footprints : A Remarkable Discovery in Morocco

In a serendipitous moment, researchers exploring a Moroccan beach stumbled upon a treasure of human history — 90,000-year-old footprints, among the oldest and best-preserved in the world.

The Unexpected Discovery : 

As the team studied boulders on a nearby pocket beach in 2022, they unexpectedly encountered a trackway with 85 remarkably well-preserved human footprints near the northern tip of North Africa. 

Lead author Mouncef Sedrati, an associate professor at the University of Southern Brittany, shared the surprising moment when the first footprint was found during exploration between tides.

A Glimpse into the Past : 

The footprint site, the only known of its kind in North Africa and the Southern Mediterranean, unveiled two trails with a total of 85 footprints. 

These imprints, left by a group of at least five early modern humans, offer a unique window into our distant past.

Utilizing optically stimulated luminescence dating, researchers determined that these footprints were created roughly 90,000 years ago during the Late Pleistocene, marking the last ice age. 

The multigenerational group, including children, adolescents, and adults, left their mark on the gently sloped beach's sand.

The exceptional preservation of these footprints can be attributed to the beach's layout and the reach of the tides. 

The rocky platform covered in clay sediments provided optimal conditions for preserving the tracks, while the tides quickly buried the beach, ensuring the footprints' longevity.

Despite the remarkable findings, questions about the ice age group's activities on the beach linger. The ongoing collapse of the rocky shore platform adds urgency to future analysis, as it could lead to the demise of this archaeological treasure.
