Controversy Surrounds Imane Khelif's Olympic Victory as Gender Debate Intensifies

Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxing sensation, silenced her critics by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics amid a storm of controversy surrounding her gender. 

Despite facing questions from prominent figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Khelif returned home to Algeria on Monday, receiving a hero's welcome.

Accusations and Controversy:

Before Khelif could fully celebrate her Olympic triumph, her former training partner, Bulgarian-Nigerian boxer Joana Nwamerue, sparked fresh controversy by publicly questioning Khelif's gender.

Nwamerue made the shocking claim that Khelif, whom she referred to as "biologically altered," is actually a man. She attributed this alleged alteration to Khelif’s upbringing in the highlands.

Nwamerue’s Claims:

Nwamerue’s comments came after a global outcry at the Olympics regarding Khelif’s eligibility to compete as a woman. 

The Bulgarian-Nigerian boxer, who had sparred with Khelif earlier in the year, stated that she observed what she described as “male power and male techniques” during their practice sessions in February.

Nwamerue further suggested that Khelif is grappling with internal issues, boldly asserting, “But he is a man. I stand by my words until he/she takes a test to prove to the world that he/she is a woman. But we all know that won’t happen.”

A Heated Debate:

Nwamerue also recalled participating in three or four sparring sessions with Khelif, during which she claims to have gathered evidence that supports her belief. “I have a record of everything. 

I can confirm that this is a man to me. Male power. Men’s techniques, everything,” she insisted during an interview with Reduxx.

However, Nwamerue admitted that Khelif's coaching team denied these allegations, insisting that “Imane is not a man.”

They explained that Khelif is a woman who grew up in the mountains with her family, which may have led to variations in her testosterone levels or chromosomes.

Khelif’s Response:

Imane Khelif, who was born a woman, is not transgender, despite the ongoing speculation. Last year, she was suspended from a boxing championship after medical tests conducted by the International Boxing Association (IBA) revealed elevated testosterone levels in her body. 

Following her Olympic victory, Khelif firmly declared her identity, stating, “I am the Olympic gold medalist, who was born as a woman and who lives as a woman.” She expressed hope that similar attacks on her character would not happen in the future.
