In a daring heist, a group of masked thieves broke into an ATM of a nationalised bank in Monikhola, Rajarhat, and stole around Rs 5 lakh cash.
The incident, which took place on Tuesday night, was discovered on Wednesday morning by the bank officials who came to repair the machine.
How the Thieves Broke the ATM :
According to the police, the thieves cut the cable that connected the ATM machine to the bank’s intranet network, which made the machine go offline.
They also disabled the CCTV cameras and the alarm system of the ATM, which had no security guard.
The thieves then used a gas cutter to cut a side panel of the ATM and accessed the cash box.
They took out the money through the cut portion and fled the scene. The police said that the thieves did not manage to empty the machine completely, but the bank officials confirmed that cash around Rs 5 lakh was missing from the machine.
How the Police Are Investigating the Case :
The Narayanpur police have registered a case of theft and mischief causing damage against the unknown miscreants, but no arrests have been made so far.
The police said that the thieves had planned the robbery meticulously and had done a proper reconnaissance of the area.
The police also said that the modus operandi of the thieves had similarities with a gang that was active in the Barrackpore area.
The police are trying to get leads and are checking other CCTV cameras in the vicinity to identify the culprits.
