In a recent surprise inspection, food safety officials in Chennai shut down Life Vaccine Store, a medical supplies distributor in Madhavaram, for selling pasteurized breast milk. 

This unexpected discovery included 40 bottles of breast milk stored in freezers, which were seized for further testing.

Commercial Sale of Breast Milk:

The store sold pasteurized breast milk at Rs 500 For 100 ml , despite the commercial sale of human breast milk being illegal in India. 

On May 24, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an advisory prohibiting such activities under the FSS Act of 2006.

Details of the Operation:

According to food safety official M Jegadish Chandra Bose, the illegal business was operated by Muthiah and his wife Satya. 

The seized bottles included donor information and collection dates, suggesting the milk was stored for several months. 

The safety of the milk is under investigation, with concerns about potential fermentation.

Investigation and Legal Actions:

A police complaint has been filed, and the food safety department is pursuing legal action under the FSS Act. 

Authorities are also investigating claims that the milk was sourced from mothers in hospitals, as the store manager stated they had ceased sales upon learning of the illegality.
