Introduction:Unexpected Overbooking Incident:

An IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Varanasi was forced to return to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after crew members discovered an overbooked passenger standing at the rear of the aircraft. The incident occurred as flight 6E 6543 was taxiing for takeoff.


Immediate Action Taken by Crew:

The crew immediately alerted the pilot about the overbooked male passenger. Consequently, the aircraft returned to the bay, and the passenger was offloaded. This led to a delay of about an hour as the airline rechecked all cabin baggage.


Statement from IndiGo Spokesperson:

An IndiGo spokesperson explained that the error was detected before the aircraft's departure. The standby passenger had been mistakenly allotted a seat reserved for a confirmed passenger. 

The spokesperson assured that IndiGo would take steps to improve their operational processes to avoid such errors in the future.


Airline Overbooking Practices:

Airlines, including IndiGo, often overbook flights to prevent empty seats and optimize revenue. However, this practice sometimes leads to complications, such as the one experienced on this flight.


Regulatory Framework and Passenger Rights:

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regulations, airlines face penalties for denying boarding to passengers with valid tickets. 

If an airline arranges an alternative flight within an hour of the scheduled departure, no compensation is required. 

However, if the alternative flight is within 24 hours, passengers are entitled to 200% of the booked fare plus an airline fuel charge, up to a maximum of Rs 10,000.

The overbooking incident on the IndiGo flight highlights the complexities of airline operations and the importance of adhering to regulations. 

While the airline took swift action to correct the error, the situation underscores the need for continuous improvement in operational processes to enhance passenger experience and compliance with aviation rules.
