However, a revolutionary change is on the horizon for Indian highways as the government gears up to introduce GPS-based toll collection systems.

Transition to GPS-Based Systems :

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently unveiled plans to replace traditional toll plazas with GPS-based systems as early as April this year. 

This move aims to streamline traffic flow and accurately charge motorists based on the distance they travel on national highways.

Pilot Implementation and Benefits :

The transition will commence with a pilot program alongside the existing FASTag system. 

By leveraging GPS technology, the new system promises to reduce congestion at toll plazas and ensure fair toll charges based on actual travel distance.

Projected Revenue Increase :

Minister Gadkari forecasts a significant surge in toll revenue, with projections indicating a jump from ₹40,000 crore to ₹1.40 lakh crore within the next 2-3 years.

Enhanced Efficiency and Reduced Waiting Times :

The implementation of FASTags in recent years has already shown promising results, slashing average waiting times from 8 minutes to a mere 47 seconds. However, challenges persist in densely-populated areas during peak hours.

How GPS-Based Toll System Works :

The GPS-based system employs an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system equipped with cameras along the highways. 

By tracking vehicles' entry and exit points and calculating the distance traveled, toll charges are automatically deducted, eliminating the need for physical toll booths.

This innovative approach offers numerous advantages, including convenience for drivers, accurate toll calculations, and the elimination of cash handling and FASTag balance checks. 

Moreover, it minimizes the risk of toll evasion and human errors, ensuring a seamless experience for all road users.
