Introduction : A Promising Start : 

Vashishtha Narayan Singh, a brilliant mind born in 1942 in Bihar's Basantpur district, displayed exceptional talent from a young age. 

Topping both BSc and MSc in consecutive years, his academic prowess paved the way for collaborations with prestigious institutions like NASA, IIT, and Berkeley. 

However, despite his early promise, a twist of fate transformed him from a potential successor to Ramanujan into a 'could-have-been.'

Early Life and Education : A Rising Star :

Hailing from an obscure village in Bihar's Siwan district, Vashishtha Narayan's journey began at Netarhat School in Jharkhand. 

His mathematical brilliance at Patna Science College earned him special attention, leading to an accelerated education plan and the completion of his PhD in 1969. 

Global Recognition : Challenging the Norms :

Vashishtha Narayan gained global recognition, with anecdotes suggesting his involvement in critical NASA calculations during a computer breakdown and contributions to the Apollo missions. Some even claimed he challenged Albert Einstein's renowned theory.

Academic Odyssey : Journey Across Borders : 

Acknowledging his brilliance, Prof John L Kelly facilitated Vashishtha Narayan's study in the US at the University of California, Berkeley. 

After a decade abroad, he returned to India, teaching at prestigious institutions like IIT Kanpur, TIFR Mumbai, and ISI Kolkata.

Tragic Turn : The Onset of Schizophrenia : 

Despite his initial success, Vashishtha Narayan's life took a tragic turn as schizophrenia afflicted him. 

By the mid-80s, he found himself institutionalized, facing personal and professional setbacks. 

His marriage dissolved in 1976, marking the beginning of a decline in academic recognition.

Mysterious Disappearance : The Vanishing Act : 

Suffering from schizophrenia, Vashishtha Narayan mysteriously disappeared during a train journey, only to be later discovered living destitute in his home village. 

Admitted to Nimhans Bengaluru and subsequently treated at IHBAS Delhi with the assistance of BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, his struggle with mental illness persisted.

The Comeback and Final Chapter : A Bittersweet Return : 

Despite the challenges, Vashishtha Narayan reentered academia at BNMU Madhepura. However, unable to realize his full potential, he passed away at the age of 72 on November 14, 2019, receiving a posthumous Padma Shri award in recognition of his contributions.
