A Frigid Start to the Season :

Kolkata experienced its coldest day of the year as the mercury dipped to 14.7°C, marking the chilliest day since January.

Last winter, the temperature plummeted to a low of 10.9°C, making it the coldest day since 2018.

However, the recent drop hints at a weather condition reminiscent of mid to late January, though winter hasn't officially set in yet.

Signs of Winter's Arrival :

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts temperatures between 14°C and 15°C for the upcoming week due to strong northwestern winds.

However, to declare the official arrival of winter, the minimum temperature needs to remain below 15°C for a specific period, influenced by various factors.

Despite fluctuations this week, hovering between 15.3°C and 14.6°C, the Met office suggests no immediate further drop.

Temperature Outlook :

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director, GK Das, anticipates stable temperatures around 14-15°C with clear skies and minimal fog for the week ahead.

The maximum temperature, averaging above 24°C and reaching 25.4°C, shows slight variation but is expected to remain relatively steady.

Previous Years and Unusual Patterns :

Comparing to last year's lowest of 13.2°C in mid-December, the gradual decline in temperatures suggested an early onset of winter.

However, this year's El Niño-influenced winter might bring a relatively warmer December despite recent drops.

Wider Impact Across the State :

Beyond Kolkata, Purulia recorded the lowest temperature at 10.3°C, followed by Bankura (10.6°C) and Kalimpong (11.5°C).

The Met Office predicts further temperature drops across the state, with possibilities of snowfall in high-altitude regions like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim due to cold northward winds.

Conclusion :

Kolkata's recent cold spell, with temperatures hitting 14.7°C, indicates a significant shift in the weather pattern, resembling mid-January conditions.

While winter hasn't officially commenced, the city and surrounding regions experience dropping temperatures.

Despite this, an unusual El Niño winter might lead to a comparatively warmer December. The state braces for colder days ahead, with high-altitude areas possibly seeing snowfall, adding to the wintry charm.
