In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have identified a colossal underwater mountain, known as a seamount, on the Pacific Ocean's floor near Guatemala. 

This massive geological formation, estimated to be a remnant of an extinct volcano, stands at an impressive height of 1,600 meters (5,249 feet), nearly doubling the elevation of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The Uncharted Depths : 

This underwater giant, covering an expansive 14 square kilometers (5.4 square miles), resides 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) below sea level. 

The revelation unfolded during an expedition by the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) in July. 

The institute employed the advanced oceanographic research vessel Falkor, equipped with a sophisticated multibeam echosounder to map the seafloor.

Navigating the Depths with Advanced Technology : 

Tomer Ketter, a hydrographer and marine technician with SOI, emphasized that this seamount had eluded existing ocean depth databases, including the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans. 

The Falkor's cutting-edge technology enabled researchers to employ sound waves in mapping the ocean floor, marking a significant stride in uncovering the mysteries hidden beneath the waves.

Beyond Expectations: More Than Just Height : 

The immense size of the seamount, covering a substantial area and situated in the Pacific Ocean off Guatemala's coast, underscores the vastness of unexplored territories in our oceans. 

Dr. Jyotika Virmani, executive director of Schmidt Ocean Institute, expressed excitement, stating, "A seamount over 1.5 kilometers tall which has, until now, been hidden under the waves really highlights how much we have yet to discover."

A Fraction Explored: Unveiling the Ocean's Secrets : 

While this discovery is monumental, it merely scratches the surface of the unknown. Over 100,000 seamounts taller than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) are estimated to exist worldwide. 

Shockingly, less than one-tenth of a percent of these underwater mountains have been explored. 

The ocean floor remains predominantly uncharted, with less than 25% mapped as of 2023, according to NOAA estimates.

Seamounts: Biodiversity Hotspots in the Deep : 

Seamounts, being remnants of extinct volcanoes, act as biodiversity hotspots in the deep ocean. 

Their geological structure provides a sturdy surface for marine life, including corals, sponges, and various invertebrates. 

The accelerated currents around these underwater mountains create unique ecosystems, fostering a diverse range of species. Approximately 15% to 35% of endemic ocean species are believed to inhabit seamount ecosystems.
