Introduction : Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Challenges : 

In the ongoing rescue operation in Uttarkashi's partially collapsed tunnel, a setback occurred as the US-made Auger machine faced damage, leading to a shift towards manual drilling. 

This unexpected twist has prolonged the rescue process, prompting officials to explore alternative methods.


Auger Machine Woes : 

The Auger machine, designed for challenging terrains, encountered frequent breakdowns due to striking obstacles. 

Its blades sustained damage, rendering it irreparable. Tunneling expert Arnold Dix confirmed the cessation of Auger usage, emphasizing the need for a different approach.


Manual Drilling Takes Center Stage : 
With only a few meters separating the trapped workers and rescuers, a strategic decision was made to rely on manual drilling for the remaining rescue operation. 

The heavy-duty drillers were repositioned, and the last 6-9 meters of debris will be cleared manually, signaling a shift from the Auger machine.


Delays and Challenges : 

Officials revealed that the Auger machine's recurrent breakdowns caused significant delays. 

After hitting an obstruction, the machine had to be pulled back 50 meters for repairs, consuming 5-7 hours each time. 

This repetitive process extended the rescue timeline beyond expectations.


Adaptive Measures : 

To mitigate delays, the rescue team opted to extend the pipeline further through manual drilling over short distances. 

This adaptive approach allows for quicker problem resolution without compromising precious time, showcasing the team's commitment to overcoming challenges.


Ground-Penetrating Radar Utilization : 

In a bid to assess the tunnel's condition, rescuers employed ground-penetrating radar (GPR). This technique revealed no heavy objects within the first 5 meters of the tunnel, providing valuable insights for the ongoing rescue efforts.


Vertical Drilling Contingency : 

Considering the challenges faced during horizontal drilling, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been tasked with transporting machines to enable vertical drilling. 

The decision on this approach will be jointly made by Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, introducing a new dimension to the rescue strategy.


The Trapped Workers' Status : 

Since the tunnel collapse on November 12, 41 workers have been trapped inside a 2-km-long built portion. Despite the challenges, the authorities have ensured the trapped individuals receive essential supplies such as food, water, medicines, and oxygen.
