A Daunting Challenge Emerges : 

In the wake of the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse, international tunnelling expert Arnold Dix assured that the trapped workers would be rescued "by Christmas." 

However, the situation took a turn for the worse as the giant drill on the site collapsed, leaving 41 workers stranded for over 15 days.

The Setback: Auger Machine Failure : 

The auger machine, brought in from the United States to break through nearly 60 meters of debris, faced a setback when its blades got entangled in the rubble. 

With the heavy drill damaged, the Indian Army has stepped in, taking on the arduous task of manual drilling to rescue the trapped individuals.

Drilling and Army's Involvement : 

Manual drilling involves personnel entering the already bored rescue passage, taking turns drilling in the confined space. 

The Indian Army, particularly a unit of Madras Sappers, has joined forces at the site, adding manpower and expertise to the rescue operations.

Race Against Time: Vertical Drilling : 

Mahmood Ahmed, MD of National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, outlined multiple plans for the rescue. 

The primary focus is on vertical drilling, a method that, if unhindered, is anticipated to take four days to reach the tunnel. 

However, challenges persist, making the timeline uncertain.

Patience Urged Amidst Uncertainty : 

Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain from the National Disaster Management Authority cautioned against setting unrealistic expectations. 

Operating in a mountainous terrain introduces unpredictability, emphasizing the need for patience in this challenging rescue operation.

Progress Amidst Obstacles : 

With vertical drilling initiated and manual drilling imminent, efforts are underway to free the stuck rotary blades using a plasma cutter airlifted from Hyderabad. 

Simultaneously, protective measures, including a landline for communication and a shelter for the workers, are being implemented.

Preparedness and Support : 

A robust support system is in place, with 41 ambulances on standby, ready to transport the rescued workers to the Chinyalisaur Community Health Centre. 

A dedicated ward equipped with 41 oxygen beds ensures prompt medical care for the individuals upon their rescue.

Tunnel's Significance in Char Dham Project : 

Situated on the Char Dham all-weather road project, the Silkyara tunnel holds strategic importance.

Its collapse has prompted a concerted effort from various authorities to ensure the safe rescue of the trapped workers.
