Water Supply Disruption Notice : 

On Saturday, water supply to significant parts of east Kolkata and the southern periphery will be suspended from 10 am due to necessary repair and maintenance work at the Dhapa water treatment plant and several associated booster pumping stations.

Impact on Areas :

The suspension will affect various areas, including Anandapur, Mukundapur, Patuli, Garia, Baishnabghata, New Garia, Kasba, Garfa, Survey Park, Panchasayar, Santoshpur, Panchannagram, Ajoynagar, Picnic Garden, and Topsia.

Affected Boroughs and Wards : 

Additionally, parts of boroughs 7, 10, 11, 12, and wards 57, 58, 66, 67, 91, 92, 99-110 will experience a halt in filtered water supply after 10 am. Normal supply is expected to resume on the morning of December 3, according to an official notice.

Importance of Dhapa Plant : 

The Dhapa plant, with a capacity to treat 30 million gallons of water daily, plays a pivotal role in supplying water to areas on both sides of EM Bypass, between Science City and Garia. 

The distribution is facilitated through a network of booster pumping stations in Mukundapur, Anandapur, Patuli, Topsia, and capsule booster pumping stations.

Maintenance Necessity : 

Senior engineers emphasize the significance of periodic maintenance at the Dhapa plant, which serves as the central hub for the extensive network. 

Items slated for repair include high-diameter valves, high-voltage motors, high-tension pumps, and electro-mechanical drives.

Water Distribution Challenges : 

Despite the Kolkata Municipal Corporation supplying 488 million gallons of water into the city's distribution system daily, nearly half of it goes to waste or remains unaccounted for, officials reveal.

Capacity Augmentation : 

With the state government's approval last year, the Dhapa plant's capacity has been augmented to produce 30 million gallons a day. Post-augmentation, an additional 20 million gallons will be generated, marking a 66% increase. 

This development is crucial to meet the rising demand resulting from the city's eastward expansion.
