Introduction : Siemens Bags €3B Project :

Siemens Mobility has achieved a groundbreaking milestone with an order for 1,200 locomotives, each boasting 9,000 horsepower (HP), from Indian Railways. 

This significant order stands as the largest locomotive order in the history of both Siemens Mobility and Siemens India. 

The comprehensive scope involves design, manufacturing, commissioning, and testing of the locomotives, with deliveries spanning over eleven years. 

The contract also encompasses 35 years of full-service maintenance.

A Historic Partnership and Commitment to Sustainability :

The locomotives will be assembled in the Indian Railways factory in Dahod, Gujarat, India, and maintenance will be conducted in four Indian Railways depots located in Vishakhapatnam, Raipur, Kharagpur, and Pune. 

Siemens CEO Roland Busch emphasizes the role of Siemens in supporting India’s sustainable transportation transformation. 

This order aligns with India's ambitious goal of creating the world’s largest green rail network, contributing to a reduction of over 800 million tons of CO2 emissions throughout the locomotives' lifecycle.

The order, spanning the assembly and maintenance phases, solidifies Indian Railways' commitment to achieving 100% electrification of rail traffic in India, further enhancing Siemens Mobility’s position in the country’s expanding railway market.

State-of-the-Art Locomotives for India's Rail Network : 

The state-of-the-art locomotives, designed for freight transport across the extensive Indian Railways network, will have the capacity to haul loads of 4,500 tons at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour. 

Boasting 9,000 HP, these locomotives are positioned as one of the world's most powerful freight locomotives. 

Advanced propulsion systems, locally produced in Siemens Mobility factories in India, will be integrated, ensuring a seamless blend of cutting-edge technology and local expertise.

Supporting India's Growth in Rail Transportation :

With India hosting one of the world’s largest rail transport networks, utilized daily by 24 million passengers on over 22,000 trains, the government aims to increase the share of railways for freight transport from the current 27% to 40-45%.
