Introduction : Cyclone Midhili and Weather Impact : 

A cyclonic storm named Midhili is set to intensify over the Bay of Bengal, presenting a unique weather scenario. This marks the first instance since 2018 that the Bay of Bengal is experiencing two simultaneous deep depressions.

In this article, we explore the expected effects of Cyclone Midhili on Kolkata and the coastal districts of West Bengal.

Cyclone Path and Intensity : 

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is projected to transform into Cyclone Midhili, bringing wind speeds of up to 80km per hour. 

Kolkata is anticipated to witness light rain as the cyclone grazes the Bengal coastline on its way to Bangladesh. 

The main impact, however, is predicted for the coastal districts, with substantial rainfall expected in North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and East Midnapore.

Rainfall Predictions : 

Alipore weathermen forecast rainfall ranging from 70mm to 110mm in the specified coastal areas between Thursday and Friday. 

Meanwhile, Kolkata is expected to receive a lighter amount of rain, ranging from 20mm to 30mm on Friday. This distribution underscores the localized impact of the cyclone on different regions.

Additional Weather Activity : 

Simultaneously, another deep depression off the Andhra coast is moving towards Odisha, contributing to the heightened activity in the Bay of Bengal. 

Despite this, experts reassure that there is no imminent interaction between the two systems or the development of a super cyclone.

Meteorological Insights : 

G. K. Das, the director of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), dispels concerns about the two systems coming too close. Midhili is the third cyclone in the northern Bay within a month and a half, highlighting the unusual weather patterns this season.

Temperature and Sky Conditions : 

While Cyclone Midhili is not expected to significantly impact Kolkata's temperature, the repeated systems in the Bay may lead to frequent clouding, preventing a notable temperature drop.

Thursday's overcast sky already caused a decrease in the maximum temperature by three notches to 27°C, pulling up the minimum to 23.9°C.
