Introduction :

 

The ambitious Kodambakkam to Poonamallee metro rail project in Chennai is swiftly advancing, marking a significant milestone with 50% of the construction completed along the 16km route. 

This transformative corridor, encompassing a larger 26.1km network, is poised to revolutionize commuting experiences for residents.

Stations Taking Shape : 

The relentless efforts of construction teams are evident as 13 out of the 18 stations are nearing completion. Workers are diligently engaged in the installation of viaducts to establish the concourse or ticketing levels, ensuring a seamless flow for future metro rail passengers. 

The construction fervor is anticipated to culminate by December 2024, setting the stage for potential public access before December 2025.

Delays in the Double-Decker Stretch : 

Despite the overall progress, a 4km double-decker stretch with four stations faces an unexpected setback. Complications in construction, particularly encountering a high-voltage underground electricity cable obstructing pillar development, may result in a delay of at least six months.

Construction Hurdles and Solutions : 

Officials are strategically addressing construction challenges, focusing on entry and exit points at crucial stations like Alapakkam, Valasaravakkam, Saligramam, Thelliagaram, Kattupakkam, and Poonamallee. 

The intricate installation of viaducts for the concourse level is progressing through various stages, showcasing the complexity and precision involved in this transformative infrastructure.

Projected Completion Timeline : 

As of October, an impressive 54% of the total work has been accomplished. According to L Girirajan, CMRL spokesman, the concerted efforts indicate a promising trajectory toward meeting the December 2024 deadline. 

CMRL managing director M A Siddique envisions the Powerhouse to Poonamallee segment as potentially being the first to open to the public in 2025. 

However, challenges in the double-decker line may cause Thirumayilai station, an interchange of corridors 3 and 4, and nearby stations, to be the last to open in 2028.
