A daring robbery attempt went wrong when an ATM of a nationalised bank caught fire as the robbers tried to cut open the cash machine with a gas-cutter in Siliguri, West Bengal. The incident took place on Monday night at Shiv Mandir in Matigara area of the city.

How the Robbery Attempt Failed : 

According to the police, a gang of eight robbers entered the ATM, lowered the shutter and started to break open the machine with a gas-cutter. 

However, a short circuit from the gas-cutter triggered a fire in the ATM, which soon engulfed the entire machine.

The robbers were unaware of the fire until a police patrol van arrived at the spot and confronted them. 

The robbers attacked the police personnel with iron rods and managed to escape in a white vehicle. 

The police officers sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.

How the Fire was Controlled and the Investigation Started : 

The fire services personnel reached the scene and doused the fire after some time. The ATM was completely gutted in the fire and the cash inside was burnt. The amount of cash in the ATM was being assessed by the bank officials.

The police checked the CCTV footage of the incident and launched an investigation to nab the culprits. The police said that the robbers were wearing masks and gloves and could not be identified easily. The police also said that they were looking for the white vehicle used by the robbers.

Conclusion : 

The robbery attempt at the ATM in Siliguri was a shocking incident that exposed the security lapses at the ATM. 

The robbers not only endangered their own lives but also caused damage to the public property and injured the police personnel. 

The police are hopeful of cracking the case soon and bringing the robbers to justice.
